Yes, I want to take my hat off to SmartFleet for this approach, that they have even started to produce such an easy and affordable way for the customer to handle reporting. Sustainability reporting as a whole is so laborious that it would be worthwhile for all service providers to offer this to their customers.

Avain Companies is a Finnish housing operator specialising in the production, construction and new construction of housing and housing services. The active investor owns around 12 000 apartments across Finland and builds 1 000 new ones per year.

Avain Companies is one of at least one hundred Finnish companies already covered by the EU’s Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). They are required to produce a sustainability report covering their entire supply chain.

Sustainability Manager Aki Moilänen has a huge job to do to gather all the data needed for reporting and calculate emissions.

“But the car part is easy. I receive a ready-to-use emissions report from SmartFleet that accurately describes the total carbon footprint, average carbon footprint and CO2 emissions per car of the cars our staff use. It can be directly integrated into the company-wide sustainability reporting.”

The emission report for cars is calculated either on the basis of kilometres driven or litres filled up. The report takes just a few minutes to generate. Anyone can buy an emissions report. The price is €10 per car for SmartFleet customers and €20 per car for others.

Key Companies strive for low emission kilometres

Key Companies have a total of 17 cars for various work tasks and employee benefits, the management of which is outsourced to SmartFleet Manager. They are all electric cars or charging hybrids, in line with the company’s policy. The aim is to achieve a low carbon footprint, even if the car’s contribution to the company’s overall carbon footprint is very small.

“Emissions from motoring only add a small colour to the pie chart of our overall emissions, but its importance should not be underestimated. I think it is a very good thing that all emissions are taken into account. When everyone has the same regulated way of calculating emissions, anyone will be able to compare them,” Aki Moilanen said.
